Brief Summary:

The main focus of this article was food allergies and their connection with mental and physical disease. Children who were diagnosed early enough with autism (a variable developmental disorder that appears by age three and is characterized by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behavior patterns) could be cured by not eating certain foods, such as milk and wheat. Their research involved a now 16 year old normal teenager who was autistic as a child. When he was age 2 they withheld certain foods from him for 2 months, recorded his behavior and actions which had improved greatly. Those foods were reintroduced after 2 months. They again recorded his action and behavior. The foods that were reintroduced showed to adverse effect on him, therefore they were permanently eliminated from his diet. They stress the importance of early childhood diagnosis of autism and the intervention by testing for delayed food allergies.

Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.

1.)    Delayed food allergy: Allergic symptoms, reactions do not appear anywhere from at least 2 hours to 7 days and characteristically involve 3 to 10 foods, sometimes as many of 20 foods in very allergic individuals.

2.)    NIMH: National Institute of Mental Health

3.)    Autism Spectrum Disorder: A popular term that refers to a broad definition of autism including the classical form of the disorder as well as closely related disabilities that share many of the core characteristics.
