Rodney Barnes Journal Article Critique #2 Journal Article Title: Autism and Food Allergies Title of Journal: Volume:
Date:
Page Numbers: Not
given
not given not given Publishing Organization: Not given Overall Evaluation: Good Why did you choose to review this particular article? This article was a required
reading assignment for Methods of Research in Allied Health class. Article Rating: This article is
very interesting reading for a research class. It claims to have a cure for autism if it is diagnosed early. As a teacher
you can show your class you can research anything. As a student it shows that you can research thing that interest you. For
a patient it gives hope. Good for teacher’s students and patients. Readability: This article was easy
to read. Most of the terminology was familiar. Course Topics covered: The article covered
topics related to research. They recorded the child’s behavior when certain foods were given and taken away. Brief Summary: The main focus of this article was food allergies
and their connection with mental and physical disease. Children who were diagnosed early enough with autism (a variable developmental
disorder that appears by age three and is characterized by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships,
by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behavior patterns) could be cured by not eating
certain foods, such as milk and wheat. Their research involved a now 16 year old normal teenager who was autistic as a child.
When he was age 2 they withheld certain foods from him for 2 months, recorded his behavior and actions which had improved
greatly. Those foods were reintroduced after 2 months. They again recorded his action and behavior. The foods that were reintroduced
showed to adverse effect on him, therefore they were permanently eliminated from his diet. They stress the importance of early
childhood diagnosis of autism and the intervention by testing for delayed food allergies. Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar
to you when reviewing this article. 1.) Delayed food allergy: Allergic symptoms, reactions do not appear
anywhere from at least 2 hours to 7 days and characteristically involve 3 to 10 foods, sometimes as many of 20 foods in very
allergic individuals. 2.) NIMH: National Institute of Mental Health 3.) Autism Spectrum Disorder: A popular term that refers to a broad definition
of autism including the classical form of the disorder as well as closely related disabilities that share many of the core
characteristics. Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article. The article was very
easy to read and follow and was very informative about a subject that is not commonly known about. It didn’t tell
if there were other studies done or studies preformed by someone else to support theirs. How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career? My wife works with children
with autism and I will share this information with her. Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more
information on the topics they cover? Yes, it has links to other autism sites. |
